PROJECT BJÖRKSKÄR

For 3 years, the project will go from sketch to full-scale prototype – a foundation for a wind turbine tower that stimulates increased biodiversity. A tough but fun schedule we think of all who cooperate on the island – OX2, Nemo Seafarms and Under Surface.

The site Björkskär creates fantastic conditions for the development of regenerative and restorative efforts of the Baltic Sea. Different test environments, habitats, give us a maximum knowledge base. Access to different depths as well. The harbour and boathouses with both high function and a fantastic atmosphere stimulate creativity. Something that drives the teams forward.

Here we develop systems that both restore and improve the quality of life in different habitats. The mix of the tools we develop creates viable environments. Knowledge that we see will be used in various initiatives in both marine and archipelago environments. All around the Baltic Sea.

OX2, NEMO SEAFARMS AND UNDER YTAN WANTS ÅLAND TO BECOME THE CENTRE FOR ALGAE AND PLIERS RESEARCH IN THE BALTIC SEA

2023 WAS THE START WE HAD HOPED FOR

Our first year out at Björkskär has been super interesting. With a lot of challenges to solve. New and interesting knowledge to analyse and refine.

We've designed Reef Foundation Pilots. Propagation lab. Mussel and algae rigs. When we have not been in the water, we have had lots of events with visits from all over the Baltic Sea region. The visits have been spiced with the fact that we ate and drank algae and seaweed in many different forms.

THERE ARE OVER 240 DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF MACRO ALGAE AROUND ÅLAND

A UNIQUE COLLABORATION

OX2, Nemo Seafarms & Under Ytan wants Åland to become the centre for Algae & Pliers research in the Baltic Sea

Åland has a perfect prerequisite for becoming the centre for algae & seaweed in the Baltic Sea. Location in the middle of the sea. The major energy investments at sea. Entrepreneurship in society. The modern mapping of the subsurface landscape – all important components for creating a clear position and development environment.

OX2, Nemo Seafarms and Under Ytan are companies with different areas of expertise to successfully create functional products and tools to increase biodiversity in the Baltic Sea. The work has already involved local entrepreneurs in the development work. The list is already long and will be even longer when we arrive in 2025.

WE CALL IT EVENT-BASED RESEARCH

Early in the planning of Project Björkskär, we decided to be public in everything we did. We would get as many people as possible to share what we did. Bring people out to this wonderful place. All year round. Invite them on a safari in the island kingdom and at the same time offer algae and seaweed in food and drink form. Our calendar of events will increase every year. Keep an eye out.
